Yogi cool

Today is the birthday of Yogi Berra, former catcher (and manager) of the New York Yankees. Yogi was famous for his “Yogisms” (“Wow, this is like deja vu’ all over again!”). Here are some other things he has said:

“You can observe a lot just by watching.”

On “Yogi Berra Appreciation Day” in St. Louis: “I want to thank you for making this day necessary.”

“If you don’t know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else.”

“If you can’t imitate him, don’t copy him.”

“Baseball is 90% mental — the other half is physical.”

“A nickel isn’t worth a dime today.”

“If the fans don’t come out to the ball park, you can’t stop them.”

When asked if first baseman Don Mattingly had exceeded expectations for the current season: “I’d say he’s done more than that.”

“If you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

“Why is it, when you call a wrong number, somebody’s always home?”

Yogi was invited to a reception at the mayor’s mansion on a very hot day in New York City. He arrived in a lime-green leisure suit. The mayor’s wife greeted Yogi at the door saying, “Why Yogi, you look cool today!” Yogi responded, “Thanks! You don’t look so hot yourself!”

Happy birthday big guy.
